Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Men who suffer from some form of erectile dysfunction (ED) disease will still need to be prescribed the drug under their doctor’s supervision, but a high price will be had paid.
A Sourial explains that men will still need to be aged 65 to be able to get a prescription and for the time being can be safely sold online.

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, a widely used medication for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, and has a similar mechanism of action as tadalafil (Cialis). The active ingredient is sildenafil citrate, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection. However, sildenafil does not have a high affinity for and is more effective in treating ED, which means it may be less effective in some patients. It is important to note that sildenafil is not a cure for ED; rather, it is a form of treatment that is often recommended by healthcare professionals for patients with underlying health conditions. It is not recommended to use sildenafil for any condition other than ED.
Sildenafil, like other PDE5 inhibitors, does not cause erections in patients who have cardiovascular disease, although some patients also have an increased risk of ED. However, sexual dysfunction is a common occurrence in patients taking PDE5 inhibitors, which may cause or worsen sexual function. The drug does not cause spontaneous erections in patients with cardiovascular disease; however, sexual dysfunction could be a contributing factor. The drug can also increase the risk of priapism (a prolonged erection that lasts more than 4 hours), which can be dangerous in patients with heart disease or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The drug may also increase the risk of a heart attack in patients who have a history of heart failure or who are at high risk for heart attack. It is important to note that the risk of developing erectile dysfunction is also increased when using sildenafil and tadalafil.
It is important to note that the drug does not have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Patients who take sildenafil may have a higher risk of developing heart problems. Therefore, it is important to discuss the benefits and potential risks with a healthcare professional before starting the medication. The drug should be taken only when needed, and should not be taken more than once a day.
If you or someone you love is currently taking sildenafil, or have recently taken viagra, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional who can provide guidance on how to safely use this medication safely and effectively.

It works by helping to relax the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into it. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition where a man cannot get or keep an erection long enough to have sex.
Sildenafil is available in tablet form and should be taken with a full glass of water approximately 30 minutes before sexual activity. It should be taken with or without food, however, taking it with a heavy meal may delay its effectiveness.
Sildenafil can cause side effects, though not everybody gets them. These can include headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, dizziness, muscle aches, or redness in the face, tongue, or throat. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, you should seek medical advice.
Sildenafil is not recommended for use by women or children, and should not be used in women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant. It is also not recommended for women who are breastfeeding, as this could harm the baby or increase the risk of harm to the infant.
Sildenafil may increase the risk of developing certain heart conditions, including heart rhythm abnormalities (a problem with the heart’s ability to pump blood more efficiently), which may be life-threatening if left untreated. These conditions can be life-threatening if left untreated.
The FDA recently warned of the potential for harmful drug interactions with Viagra and other drugs including prescription medications.
The warning was based on a detailed analysis of the safety information on the drug information page of the website.
